If you store Restricted Data on your computer, especially if it is a portable computer, you should use encryption software for the files and secure delete software when you delete the files or if you replace or throw out the disk the data is stored on. Below are some suggestions of free programs to use, although there are many other options available.

Encryption

  • Encrypting File System (EFS) - Windows -built into Windows XP Pro, encrypts files or folders.
  • Filevault - OSX - built in utility to encrypt your home folder.
  • TrueCrypt - Windows, OS X, Linux - creates a virtual encrypted disk to store sensitive files. Useful for portable drives such as USB flash drives.

Secure Deletion

  • Secure Empty Trash - OSX - built in utility to securly delete files in the Trash
  • DeleteOnClick - Windows - Freeware program that adds "Securly Delete" option to right-click menu
  • Eraser - Windows - Free program that erases files, drives, empty space, etc.
